My Coastal explorer is crashing on start up all day. Restarted computer numerous times. Cannot access any menus on software. Tried 10x now with same result. Imediate “not responding” msg with no button function. No chart displayed, just black screen with emblem and as soon as I attempt to click on anything including closing program or minimzing window the not responding msg shows and screeen blanks. I have to close program to get out via window error txt box.
Same problem here. Mine locked up at exactly 16:38 EST. Noticed because the clock didnt match when i was getting off watch. Haven’t been able to get it back up tried rerunning updates from the website still same black screen with emblem and “not responding”.
There appears to be a problem generating tide and/or current predictions at the end of this year for some reason and it is causing Coastal Explorer to lock up. We don’t know the cause of this yet and will release a software update as soon as we can. In the mean time, we can offer a DIY fix:
If you can start Coastal Explorer without the lockup problem, upgrading your tide and current data should fix your Conditions browser. To do that, open this page and follow the instructions there: 2026 US Tide and Current Data - Rose Point .
If you have tide or current stations enabled at all times, your Coastal Explorer is probably locking up at startup and this is the only fix we know of for that:
Use the Windows File Explorer to open “C:\ProgramData\Rose Point Navigation Systems\Modules”. (Windows normally hides the ProgramData folder so you might need to copy and paste that into the folder name box at the top of the File Explorer to get there.)
Find the directory called “noaa_tides” and delete it.
Coastal Explorer should start normally now and you should be able to access the Conditions browser. However, there won’t be any tide or current predictions until you upgrade your data with the above link.
If you are not comfortable using File Explorer, our support staff can assist you during their normal hours.
YOU are the man! One of the fastest DIY fixes for a bug that I’ve ever come across.
I’d like to recommend that this fix be stickied for anyone else that comes this way.
oh and for anyone else that has made it to Windows Explorer/File Explorer, to view hidden files, simply click the VIEW tab on the top and then simply check the “view hidden files” box to be able to view noaa_tides
I’d recommend that you also uncheck this box after you are finished fixing your Coastal Explore.
