Program updates not installing

Coastal Explorer program updates are not installing from inside the app; error message is “this file could not be created .. being used by another process”. No obvious reason why … no other users or sessions running, tried restarting Windows and CE, chart updates install no problem. Have screen shots.

Same error message when trying to download and install the latest version from the website.

That message can be caused by security software, disk cleanup tools, and other utilities that scan your drives. However, those processes usually only lock a file for a short time. It might also be caused by file permissions issues which are sometimes caused by installing the software as one user and then trying to update it as another user. Rose Point Support might be able to figure this out if you give them a call and give them access to your PC.

But if you want to try to fix this on your own, here are a couple of things to try: Does the message say what file is causing the problem? If it does, you might try using the Windows File Explorer to remote that file and try again. You might also try just renaming the “Coastal Explorer” folder in your “Program Files” (or “Program Files (x86)”) folder and trying to setup again. If setup succeeds, then you can delete the old Coastal Explorer folder, but if there’s still a problem, you can rename it back to Coastal Explorer until support can give you a hand.

Affected file was chart.exe i.e. the application. Solution was to delete the file and reinstall Coastal Explorer. All the other files and my data were unaffected.

I’m glad you were able to figure this out and get past it! The setup and update programs are supposed to detect when Coastal Explorer is running and ask you to exit the app. I take it that did not happen? Or did Coastal Explore not appear to be running? (Sometimes programs don’t exit completely and keep their files locked.)
