After downloading the Canada vector charts a few of the US charts have lower detail when fully zoomed in, some of these are very low detail. The affected areas are from Lopez island down to Port Angeles and over to Umatilla Reef. When I zoom into these areas the dialog box shows the scale changing, down to 1:1000, but the resolution stays the same.
All US charts north of Everett are shown as UNOFFICIAL, which I hadn’t noticed before the download. All the BC charts appear to have high detail when zoomed in. I’ve restarted and sync the program a couple times.
NOAA has been “rescheming” their charts which means they are replacing all of their charts with new ones covering areas differently. Depending on how you’ve installed your NOAA charts, you may or may not be getting all of those updates when you sync.
The best way to install your charts is by Coast Guard District. This ensures that all charts within that district are kept up to date as new ones are added and old ones are cancelled. (It is also possible to install individual charts, but then only those charts will be kept up-to-date and if NOAA cancels one of them, it is removed from your display but its replacement won’t be installed automatically.)
The next potential problem is that there are a few places near the border that are covered by both NOAA and CHS charts and there are times when one of the charts has a scale closer to the viewing scale but less detail than one of the other charts. Coastal Explorer chooses the chart with the closer scale for the display since there’s no way for the program to tell which one has more detail.
If you right-click on the chart in an area where you don’t think the right chart is being displayed and select the “Charts Here” option, you will see a list of charts that cover that spot. You can then click on one of those charts to hide it so that the next “best” chart will be displayed.
The UNOFFICIAL indicator will always appear when a CHS chart is visible because they are not legally considered to be “official” charts even though they are made from the official CHS data.
