I found this article on another forum and it piqued my interest, especially at the end where it talked about potential problems in PC based navigation. I don’t think it is a problem the way I use CE with a NEMO providing N2K GPS input, but it could affect use of CE with a GPS puck. Has any one see the problem noted in this link?
This problem will only affect positions coming from a system’s “location services” when the system is using Wi-Fi to “guess” at the location. It will have no effect on positions from an actual GPS.
Coastal Explorer on Windows is not able to use location services, so is not affected by this at all.
However, on Android and iOS devices, the use of location services is enabled by default. Locations derived from Wi-Fi are considered to be of “low accuracy” and will cause the sensor status instrument’s POSN indicator to turn yellow while most GPS positions are of “high accuracy” which will turn the indicator green. It is possible to disable the use of location services in “Settings > Electronics” if you really want to, but that will also disable the use of the GPS built into your phone.
Normally it is not necessary to disable location services in Coastal Explorer because it will prioritize any other position sources over location services and you can always see what position sensor is in use by tapping the POSN status indicator.
