After import of tracks the weight of track lines is very fine and difficult to see.
Are you able to import outher type of file onto your iPad. I have no issue importing GPX FILES however my .NOB files all appeared to be grayed out in iCloud.
All of my .nob files are grayed out on Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. I can import .gpx files. Would be happy to send you a .nob file.
Brad,
Does one need to import the .gpx files individually if going from CE 4 to the iPhone edition (or can one successfully export the entire library of routes, waypoints, etc)?
Also - can you please expand on what is in the works to auto-sync Coastal Explorer user info between all devices?
I could see setting up a VIEW ONLY mode on an external iPad would be a neat feature - so Mom could track my sailing progress (putting her worries to rest) LOLâŚ
A GPX file can contain any number of routes, marks/waypoints, and tracks. When you import a GPX file into Coastal Explorer, a new âcollectionâ is created that contains a copy of all of the objects contained in that GPX file. If you entire library of objects was in the GPX file, then your entire library will wind up in that collection.
However, I strongly recommend NOT using GPX files to transfer objects to your iPhone or iPad from your PC. GPX is a very generic file format that can only handle marks, routes, and tracks so any range/bearing lines or boundary lines, areas, or circles you might have would not come across. Many properties of marks, routes, and tracks are not supported by GPX either. The only way to really get your âentire libraryâ of navigation objects is to use NOB files.
If your âentire libraryâ is in a single NOB file, then that is what you should import. If you have organized your objects into separate NOB files (aka Voyage Plan Documents), then youâd need to import each of those in order to have your entire library on your iPad.
If you have Coastal Explorer on your iPhone and an iPad (or multiple iPhones/iPads), your collections (and the objects they contains) will be synchronized between them. In other words, add a route on one device, and that route will appear on the other devices. This feature requires internet access for the changes to make it to other devices, but changes made while offline will be synchronized when your device goes online later.
When Coastal Explorer V4 on the PC is updated to support these new âcollectionsâ, it will allow you to easily import all your navigation objects without needing to deal with files at all.
We do intend to allow something like the view only mode you mentioned⌠More on that later!
Some of us are not able to import a .nob file, only a .gpx file. The .nob file is grayed out and cannot be imported. I have tried using OneDrive, Dropbox, and Apple files. It is always grayed out. I even navigated to the actual .nob file that CE on my PC uses rather than exporting it first. Still grayed out. So when you strongly recommend .nob files over .gpx files, I would really like to abide but until this problem is fixed, I and others cannot.
Understood⌠I just wish we could reproduce the problem of them being grayed out so we could fix it. Weâve tried iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, email, and other things and have never seen a grayed out NOB file. Weâve even had a few people email us their NOB files that wouldnât work and they have all worked for us. A very frustrating problem, for sure!
However, the main point I was trying to make is that there is no way for someone to get their âentire libraryâ imported into Coastal Explorer using GPX since that format cannot support everything that might be in that library.
We will continue to work on this problem and Iâm confident that weâll be able to fix it as soon as we can actually see it happening. In the mean time, just know that GPX files only contain a subset of your data and youâll want to re-import everything when that is possible.
We finally found a device that showed NOB files in gray! Iâm still not sure why this only happened on some devices, but I believe we were able to get this fixed in build 46.
Build 46 fixed my grayed out .NOB file bugâŚ
Appreciate the efforts

The new version did fix the grayed out NOB problem, more or less. My first attempt was to import from Dropbox. Nothing happened. After 5 minutes I tried again from iCloud. I got an immediate response and within a couple of minutes the screen showed a world view, with lots of black in the areas where weâve sailed in N & S America.
It then took a long time before I could step my way into more detailed charts. When I got to where a few charts in the Puget Sound would render, the system froze for a couple of hours. I finally restarted it and everything appears fine.
My initial view is that it is very slow. But it was late at night and I had an early boat to catch. More laterâŚ
Well done, Rosepoint crew! This is a fine achievement.

Yes, it is fixed! I was able to upload a .nob file.
